- पर्यावरण दो शब्दों से मिलकर बना है, इसका संधि विच्छेद करे तो परि +आवरण है, जिसका सीधा अर्थ ‘चारो ओर से घिरा हुआ’ होता है।
- पर्यावरण के अंतर्गत नदी, तालाब, भूमि, वायु, पौधे, पशु -पक्षी आदि सभी आते हैं और इन्हीं से पर्यावरण का निर्माण होता है।

- मानव की विभिन्न गतिविधियों ने पर्यावरण को बड़े स्तर तक प्रभावित किया है। मनुष्य ने पर्यावरण को विभिन्न प्रकार से हानि पहुंचाई है, जिनमें जल प्रदूषण, वायु प्रदूषण, मृदा प्रदूषण आदि शामिल है।
- पर्यावरण को बचाने के लिए और वायु को शुद्ध रखने के लिए हमें अधिक से अधिक पेड़ों को लगाना चाहिए, पेड़ों को लगाने से वायु स्वच्छ होती है और मिट्टी का कटाव भी रुकता है।
- पर्यावरण को शुद्ध बनाने में पेड़ों का अधिक महत्व होता है, जिसका अंदाजा आप ऐसे लगा सकते हैं कि पेड़ों को लगाने से बाढ़ का खतरा कम होता है।
- हमारे पर्यावरण में अनगिनत वनस्पतियां पाई जाती है और पर्यावरण में ही विभिन्न प्रकार के पशु -पक्षियों का निवास स्थान है, वही पर्यावरण में पाई जाने वाली विभिन्न प्रजातियां पर्यावरण का संतुलित बनाए रखने में महत्वपूर्ण योगदान देती है।
- पर्यावरण के महत्व को हमारे पूर्वज भी अच्छे से समझते थे और यही वजह है कि उन्होंने पर्यावरण को पूजना शुरू कर दिया था। उन्होंने गंगा नदी को देवी के रूप में और सूर्य को देवता के रूप में पूजकर पर्यावरण को संस्कृति में शामिल किया था।
