- हाथी को इंग्लिश मे elephant कहा जाता है और हाथी का वैज्ञानिक नाम एलिफ्स मैक्सिमस है।
- हाथी के 4 पैर, दो लम्बे कान, दो छोटी आंखे तथा एक सुंड और एक लम्बी पूँछ होती है और हाथी एक बहुत ही बुद्धिमान और शांत जानवर होता है।
- हाथी ज्यादातर स्लेटी रंग के होते है और हाथी के 28 दाँत होते है, जिनमे से 2 दाँत बड़े होते है जो बाहर की ओर निकले हुए होते है।

- हाथी ज्यादातर अपने झुण्ड मे रहना पसंद करते है और कभी -कभी अपने झुण्ड से बिछड़ भी जाते है।
- हाथी का औसतन जीवनकाल 70 वर्ष का होता है, वही मादा हाथी का गर्भकाल 22 महीनों का होता है और मादा हाथी ज़ब बच्चे को जन्म देती है तो उस बच्चे का वजन लगभग 104 किलो तक होता है।
- एशियान हाथी का वजन लगभग 4000 किलोग्राम होता है तथा अफ्रीकान हाथी का वजन 6000 किलोग्राम का हो सकता है, वही हाथी के सुंड का वजन लगभग 100 किलोग्राम होता है।
- हाथी खड़े -खडे ही सोते है बैठकर नहीं सोते है, हाथी दिन मे सिर्फ 2 से 3 ही घंटे सोते है और बाकी के 16 घंटे वह भोजन की तलाश मे इधर -उधर घूमते रहते है।
- एक दिन मे एक हाथी औसतन 300 किलोग्राम खाना खाता है तथा एक दिन मे 160 लीटर पानी पीता है।
